A Night in the Rose Wing

That evening, I went to visit Callum. I told him nothing of my discovery, of the strange, sad journey I’d been on. All I wanted was to be with him, and to forget about the Graysons and their ill-fated child.

He held me as we lay in bed, and we talked about his coming visit, which managed to cheer me up a little.

“Looking forward to it?” he asked.

“You’ll love Will,” I promised him for the thousandth time, my head leaning on his chest. “And Liv will be so happy to see you.”

“And Lachlan?” he asked. “Do you think he’ll be happy that I’m there?”

“He likes you,” I said, pulling up to look into his intense blue eyes. “Why wouldn’t he be happy to see you?”

Callum’s jaw tensed for a moment before he cracked a smile and shook his head. “I don’t know why I asked that,” he said. “Just a feeling. He sees me as competition, even if he’s not entirely conscious of it.”

“Competition?”

“For your affection, among other things.”

I pondered that for a minute. Lachlan did have a funny habit of comparing himself to Callum—a lot. I’d always attributed it to some male ego thing. It wasn’t anything I took particularly seriously. Any young man who had Callum Drake in his sights would probably feel a little insecure around him, after all. Callum was the most impressive person I’d ever met.

“Well,” I said, twisting myself around to plant a kiss on his lips, “Just in case, I can assure you there’s no reason to be jealous of Lachlan. But come to think of it, jealousy would be sort of cute.”

“I’m not jealous,” he said, putting his hand around the back of my neck, kissing me hard, then smiling again as he pulled away. “Jealousy is an emotion for people who are insecure—and I am not insecure. At least, not where you’re concerned. I’ve never had so much faith in anything as I do in the certainty that you love me.”

As he spoke, he pulled at the chain around my neck, taking the silver ring between his fingers.

“I know,” I replied. “I know that you know.”

“I also know that if ever you decide you’d like to spend your life away from me,” he added, “I’d survive. Not happily, of course. But you, Vega Sloane, are a strong, intelligent woman, and I would never want you to stay with the likes of me against your will.”

“Well, I’m very grateful to know you don’t plan on shackling me in the dungeons in order to secure my hand in marriage, or whatever it is that evil weirdos do in fairytales.”

“It I ever shackled you in a dungeon,” he laughed, “it would only be for fun.”

“I’ve spent enough time in dungeons for one lifetime, thanks,” I chuckled. “There are other, better ways to amuse ourselves.”

“Such as?”

“Such as flying around on Caffall’s back. Winning a war. Installing you on the throne you deserve.”

“And then?”

“And then, living happily ever after…whatever that may mean.”

“That whatever has a lot of weight to it,” Callum said, sitting up, his back straightening.
